A well-managed seed library is the foundation of a successful growing operation. CropsBook's Seed Inventory feature lets you track every variety you own, scan packets instantly with AI, and build a lineage record for seeds you save year to year.
Accessing Seed Inventory
Go to More → Farm Management → Seed Inventory to see your seed library. Each entry in the library represents one variety from one source — for example, "Cherokee Purple Tomato from Baker Creek 2025".
Adding Seeds Manually
Tap + to add a new seed entry. Record:
- Crop and variety name
- Seed source — the company or farm you purchased or received them from
- Year purchased or harvested
- Quantity on hand — packet count, weight, or unit count
- Germination rate — from packet data or your own test results
- Expiry or "use by" date
- Storage location — freezer, refrigerator, dry cabinet
- Notes
AI Seed Packet Scanner
The fastest way to add seeds is to photograph the seed packet. The AI Document Scanner reads the packet label and extracts the variety name, planting depth, spacing, days to maturity, and seed company automatically.
To use it: More → AI Tools → AI Document Scanner, then point your camera at the seed packet. The AI processes the image on-device and pre-fills the seed inventory form. Review the fields and tap Save. PREMIUM
The seed packet scanner works best in good lighting. If a field is misread, you can correct it before saving. The AI improves over time as it sees more packet layouts.
Seed Saving Records
For seeds you save from your own harvest, use More → Farm Management → Seed Saving to record the lineage. Each saved seed entry links to:
- The parent crop entry in your Crops tab
- The harvest date the seeds were collected
- The garden bed they grew in
- The generation number (F2, F3, etc. for breeding projects)
- Your germination test results
Seed Lineage Tracking
Over multiple seasons, saved seed records build a complete lineage — showing you exactly which plant each batch of seeds came from, and how your selection work is progressing. This is invaluable if you're developing your own varieties or maintaining landrace populations.
Saved seeds automatically appear in your Seed Inventory, so your library stays in sync whether you're buying from a catalog or growing your own.
Tip: When you do a germination test, log the results in the seed entry immediately. That way your inventory always reflects true viability — not just what was printed on the packet years ago.
